Microsoft decided to name its new operating system after a view of distant prospects. The choice is apt. Although 20 million copies of Vista have been sold since the January launch, Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer has been forced to rein in analysts' early expectations for the operating system. The company's stock has taken a hit as a result, falling 9% since Vista's launch.
